What's The Best Sized Collar For My Puppy?

Hello,

I'm getting a cocker spaniel puppy in about 4 weeks. She will be 10 weeks when we pick her up. I was just wondering if you could help me with what size collar she would need and what type?

Thanks

Hello,

I would check with the breeder first as your puppy may already have a little collar, or your breeder may be planning to supply you with a collar and lead as part of your 'package'. I know ours did.

If not, take a trip to your local pet store and ask for a puppy collar, even better if they have specific collars for Cocker Spaniel puppies!

The collar should be fairly thin and probably be no more than around 6 - 8 inches, and it should be adjustable. A well-fitted collar should allow you to comfortably slide two fingers between the collar and your puppy's neck.

I don't recommend leather as it can shrink when wet. Instead, take a look at the adjustable nylon collars which can be easily washed if necessary.

I'm sure you're aware that puppy necks are very delicate, so don't place any real pressure here and never jerk a puppy by a collar or lead as it can cause serious injury to the neck.

When you're ready to take your puppy out for walks on his lead, you may find this article on leash training very useful.

Good luck and enjoy your new puppy when she arrives!

Collar Size For A Puppy

I wouldn't recommend a choke chain for a puppy. I know several owners of puppies that have choke chains and the puppies look so miserable.

Their owners pull them and jerk them on their chains and the puppies keep pulling back. It's a natural reaction - if you pull a dog or a puppy one way, they will pull back the other - it's doggie nature!

The leader of the socialization classes we go to have asked them to change to nylon collars with quick release clips but they're not interested.

Sorry for the rant - I just had to give my cents worth.

That sounds about right to me. I asked the vet the same question yesterday and got more or less the same answer.
