I have a 2 year old cocker spaniel, and when she sleeps her nose constantly drips clear discharge. Is there any thing I can do to help her breath better?

What a beautiful little girl you have there - she's lovely!

You don't give many details about your cocker's symptoms, but I'll try and offer some advice.

I'm puzzled that her nose only runs at night. Do you spray her with anything at night? Do you walk her in a different place in the evening, perhaps where she can inhale pollen? It sounds like an allergy to me, but I'm not a vet.

If you're sure that the discharge is clear and that there's no trace of blood in it, it's probably either an upper respiratory infection (a cold or flu') or an allergy (allergic rhinitis).

If it's an allergy, it could be caused by pollen or dust, or atopy. If it's caused by pollen you would have noticed this before, when the pollen season arrives.

If it's canine atopy the runny nose will be accompanied by sneezing and watery eyes and itchy skin.

If your cocker spaniel is otherwise acting normal, it's probably nothing to worry about but I would certainly take her to see the vet so that you can get a professional diagnosis. Make sure you list out all the symptoms (if there are others) and let the vet know how long this has been going on and that her nose only runs at night.

I'm sorry I couldn't help you more, but I'd be interested to learn what the problem was, and that your Cocker Spaniel is better soon.

Kind regards,
Pauline

That's not very helpful, anonymous! Her owner is very obviously worried about her dog. Have some compassion!
