Wierd problem

by Hitesh
(New Delhi)

My cocker spaniel puppy (2 months old) has begun to act very wierd over the past two or three days. When he goes to sleep, or tries to sleep, he yelps and his body shakes.

When I try to touch him or make him feel calm he tries to bite me.

When I pick him up and play with him he becomes normal as if nothing has happened.

Kindly advise what to do?

First of all I'd recommend you take him to see his vet just to be certain that your puppy is fit and healthy and not in any pain.

If your puppy gets the all clear from his vet, you can then take the time to consider his 'symptoms'.

When dogs sleep, they dream, just like humans. When they are dreaming, they can make some interesting noises; they can yip, cry, yelp or bark. Sometimes they can sound as if they are in real distress and it can be really frightening to an owner who's never experienced it before.

They also twitch and shake when dreaming, and when they're dreaming of chasing rabits, their legs 'run' - it's really sweet to watch!

It sounds to me like your puppy is dreaming.

Have you ever heard the saying, 'Let sleeping dogs lie?' Well, there's a reason for this. A sleeping dog will growl, attack, or bite if disturbed. It's a natural instinct - they are frightened and believe they're being threatened.

Note how once your puppy realises it's you, he's relaxed and enjoys a cuddle.
