Why Is My Cocker Spaniel Sick Every 3 Months?

by Christina
(Brooklyn, NY)

Every three months like clockwork my dog becomes lethargic, has a fever, and doesn't eat for three days. I have absolutely no idea what's wrong - what do you think this is?

Since her symptoms are so non-specific the vet never knows what she has and racks up a hefty bill trying to figure it out!

Please, can anyone help?

Sickness every 3 months
by: Katie

Sorry to hear about your dog's sickness problems. If you can rule out that she hasn't eaten anything and she's not having regular access to anything she shouldn't, ie. chocolate, grapes (both of which can be deadly poisonous to dogs), these sickness bouts may be to do with her hormones changing during her cycle.

How old is she?

Has she been spayed?

You could try mentioning this to your vet, spaying might be an option. Some dogs, like girls, display unusual behaviours when their hormones change, which they do, fairly rapidly, as a dog matures and grows much quicker than a person.

Although spaying usually helps a bitch if she is prone to strange hormone-related behaviours, it's not a cure-all which is why some spayed bitches can still exhibit behaviours like false pregnancy, for example.

Your vet might advise you try her on some hormone treatment, see if it makes a difference.

Sickness

This may sound stupid, but does she get taken to any particular place every three months? Somewhere where she can get access to something that could make her ill - for example, a particular field where poisonous mushrooms grow?

I've never heard of such a thing - I can't even begin to understand it. However, I can understand you annoyance with the vet - their charges can be sky-high!
