Why Does My Cocker Carry His Pellets Around The House?

by Cindy
(Cape Town)

My Cocker Spaniel is 8 years of age, and ever since he was a puppy he would take a mouthful of pellets and eat them somewhere else.

However, in the last 8 months he has begun to carry the pellets all around the house and not eat them.

Occasionally he eats them, but mostly just leaves them until we pick them up.

He also "stores" almost an entire bowl full of pellets in his bed.

Is this normal and how can I attend to this?

He's well looked after - he's exercised regularly, given proper food which I buy from the vet, and we don't have another dog.

We give him a lot of attention and there is no stress or change of events in home.

I've read up a bit about it, but just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to take care of him to the best of my ability.

My Cocker Does This Too
by: Karen (Manchester UK)

Hi - just to let you know that my Cocker Spaniel "Dillon" also does this with his food and also my mum and dad have a Springer Spaniel called Chleo and she does exactly the same, so I don't think there's anything to worry about,

Regards
Karen

He's Not Hungry
by: Anonymous

It sounds to me like he's not hungry. Like humans, as dogs age they don't need to eat as much as they normally would, nor do they want to as their appetites diminish.

Check that you're feeding him the right amount, as recommended by the manufacturers, and then try feeding him a little less and see if he still hoards his food.

If he does, remove a little more from his bowl.

I'd recommend you feed him two or three times during the day to ensure he eats everything that you give him.

Is it possible that he's got access to another food source? Somebody else feeding him, perhaps?

If you're really worried, why not speak to your vet's practice nurse?
