Weeing Indoors Overnight

by Donna
(North Wales)

Hi, we have a lovely rescued male working cocker spaniel who is still intact. He is about 3 years old. We have had him for about 1.5 years.

Just recently he has started weeing at night, this happens even if we take him for a walk before bed time.

I have tried taking him in the garden but as we have always walked him I don't think he understands yet what we want him to do.

Do you think neutering him would help, or perhaps training him by keeping him in a crate overnight until such time as he understands.

I have praised him when he does a wee in the garden and also when he has been clean overnight but it doesn't seem to be working.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Dog Peeing Inside At Night
by: Pam

Have you checked with your vet that your dog hasn't developed any problems with his 'waterworks'? This may be causing a problem for him. If he gets a clean bill of health, try stopping his water after 7pm or 8pm and see if that helps.

If you've not trained your dog to pee in the garden, I would recommend that you do, otherwise you are always going to have to walk him to pee. What happens if you're ill and can't walk him for a couple of days? If you train him to pee in the garden, on command/request, that will solve your problems.

I wish you and your Cocker well.
