Waiting for the Kids

by Barbara Vander Meulen
(Michigan)

Cracker "Jack" was rescued by the Cocker Spaniel Rescue after spending his first six months in a crate.

Four weeks after Jack came to live with in his new home he returned the rescue favor. Although a smoke detector had not sounded an alarm, smoke from an exterior fire was filling the house.

Jack jumped on his sleeping owner to wake her up and make her aware of the fire.

Besides being top dog to his owners thirteen grandchildren, Jack also serves as campground host at Muskegon's Lake Michigan State Park in west Michigan and has his own fan club.

Jack greets campers, leads bicycle parades, and is always available to listen to new readers read around the campfire.

Jack's personality and love for children make him a valuable ambassador for the State of Michigan.
