Unfriendly With Other Dogs

I have an 8 year old, female, solid black cocker, who I have had since she was a puppy. For many years she was fine with other dogs but over the last couple of years she has become very unfriendly with other dogs.

What will normally happen is she will inquisitively sniff other dogs but the second they start to sniff her, or get to close she will growl and go to snap at them.

Although she has never properly bitten another dog, her growl sounds very viscous and I feel I am constantly apologizing to other dog owners for her behavior.

Can you suggest any reasons why my dog does this and how we could prevent her bad behavior?

Growling At Other Dogs
by: Dog Lover

Has your dog recently had a bad experience with another dog - an experience bad enough to 'traumatise' her?

If so, that may be the problem.

I can really sympathize with you - having to worry when other dogs are around must take the pleasure out of walking her.

I don't know much about behavioural problems in dogs, so I'm sorry I can't be much help.

Have you considered a dog behavioural specialist?
