Toilet Training

by Michelle
(Doncaster UK)

My 10 week old male cocker spaniel puppy will only wee when I am outside with him. If I try to come back into the house or leave him outside he won't go and will hold it until he comes back in the house and will then mess when he's with me.

Should I be worried? Any suggestions?

Hi Michelle,

No, I don't think you should be too worried about your puppy not wanting to wee in these circumstances.

I suspect the reason for this is that your puppy is a little insecure and doesn't want to be left on his own. When he sees that you're about to go back inside, he probably thinks he's going to be left on his own and becomes a little anxious that he's going to be left alone.

In any case, I would always recommend that you stay with your puppy until he does wee - that way you can be certain that he won't wee inside and you can get on with your day without worrying.

I would also suggest that you read my articles:

These articles may help you to understand his anxiety (if, indeed he is anxious) and will give you an idea of what you can do to reassure him.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

Puppy Won't Pee Outside
by: Anonymous

Stick with your puppy until he pees - he's obviously worried that you'll leave him on his own.

Another reason for you to stick around is to tell him he's a good boy when he pees or poos, how else is he going to learn that that is what you want him to do?

Give him a little treat and praise him each time he does the business outside and he'll soon learn not to pee in the house.
