More Spaniel Breeds



This page shows more spaniel breeds, and offers a brief description and a photograph of each.

The Clumber Spaniel

The Clumber Spaniel is long and low to the ground; it's strong, and is the heaviest of the spaniels.

It stands between 43-51 cms height (17-20"), and weighs between 35-38.5 Kgs (55-85 lbs).

The Clumber Spaniel's coat is very dense, and predominantly white with lemon or orange markings.

The Field Spaniel

The Field Spaniel was traditionally used for retrieving game.

They have delicate, chiselled facial features, with a longer body for balance.

They're slightly bigger than the Cocker but not so big as the Springer, and they enjoy plenty of exercise.

The Field Spaniel has a biddable, loving temperament and makes a loving companion, but is equally happy as a working gundog.



The French Spaniel

The French Spaniel, also known as Epagneul Francais, is not well-known outside of France.

They're a tall breed and can grow up to 60cms (24") in height.

The French Spaniel is a gundog capable of pointing and retrieving.

Their coat is medium length, with feathers on the chest, underbelly, back of forelegs, and long feathers on the ears, and their colouring is white with liver patches.

The German Spaniel

The German Spaniel is also known as the Deutscher Wachtelhund, and is a strong, muscular bird dog, which can also be used to retrieve hares and foxes.

It also loves working in and around water.

The German Spaniel is slightly larger than the Springer Spaniel, and its coat is well-feathered, but quite short on the head and neck.



The King Charles Spaniel

The King Charles Spaniel is sometimes also know as the English Toy Spaniel, and was originally bred in England for flushing small birds from the undergrowth, however, because of their small size, and friendly affectionate nature, they were also used as lapdogs.

They are a small, sturdy dog with a pug nose and wide open nostrils.

They have a domed head, and their jaw has a slight underbite. They weigh between 4-6 Kgs, (8-14 lbs)and reach 25.5-30 cms (10-12") in height.

The King Charles Spaniel breeds have a soft and silky coat and are quite well feathered. Their coats come in black and tan, red, white and red, and a tricolour, white with black and tan markings.
