Spaniel Breeds

Loading

There are many different Spaniel breeds, for example, American Cocker Spaniel, King Charles Cocker Spaniel, Cavalier Cocker Spaniel, and so on.

Spaniels come in all shapes and sizes, some more pleasing on the eye than others, and some more suited to certain terrain than others.

The following pages offer a brief description and photograph of a selection of other Spaniel breeds, as follows:

American Cocker Spaniel, American Water Spaniel, Blue Picardy Spaniel, Boykin Spaniel, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, The Clumber Spaniel, The Field Spaniel, The French Spaniel, The German Spaniel, The King Charles Spaniel, The Irish Water Spaniel, The Pont-Audemer Spaniel, The Russian Spaniel, The Sussex Spaniel, The Welsh Springer Spaniel, The English Springer Spaniel.

The American Cocker Spaniel

The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest member of the gundog group.

It's slightly smaller than the English Cocker Spaniel, with a much heavier coat, shorter muzzle and a more domed head.

Although the American Cocker Spaniel will point and retrieve game in the field, it is more often kept as a family pet, you will also often see them as show dogs.

Discover more about the differences between the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel.

The American Water Spaniel

It's thought that the American Water Spaniel is a descendant of the Irish Water Spaniel, the Field Spaniel and the Old English Water Spaniel.

They're a very intelligent dog and are very good as part of a family.

Their coat is a tightly curled outer layer, with a protective layer underneath.

The American Water Spaniel is classed as a medium-sized gundog. They stand around 38-46cm high, (15-18") and weigh between 11.5-20.5 Kgs (25-45 lbs).

The Blue Picardy Spaniel

The Blue Picardy Spaniel originates from France, and is sometimes also known as Epagneul Bleu de Picardi.

They're medium-sized sporting dogs and, with their long legs, may sometimes be mistaken for setters.

Their coats are thick and flat and may occasionally be slightly wavy, with feathering on their ears, legs, underbelly and tail.

The Blue Picardy Spaniel is predominantly blue-grey with black patches.

They grow to between 56-61cm (22-24") high, and weigh in at around 20.5 Kgs (45 lbs).

The Boykin Spaniel

The Boykin Spaniel is originally from America. It's one of the medium-sized spaniel breeds, and is used for hunting.

The Boykin Spaniel is slightly larger, and has a heavier coat and feathering than the Cocker Spaniel.

Its coat is solid liver/chocolate, with perhaps a small white mark on the chest.

It retrieves in the water as well as in the field.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a different breed from the King Charles Spaniel, although it is a direct descendant.

The easiest way to differentiate between the two is by looking at the head. The Cavalier King Charles has a fairly flat head, whereas the King Charles Spaniel's head is quite domed.

They're small but well-balanced, eager and affectionate dogs. Their are around 30-33cm (12-13") in height, and can weigh between 5-8 kgs (10-18 lbs).

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has eyes that are very gentle, large and round but not prominent, and their ears are long and set quite high. They have wide open nostrils.

Their coat is long and straight, and very silky, sometimes slightly wavy, and has plenty of feathering. They share the same coat colours as the King Charles Spaniel; black and tan, red, white and red, and a tricolour, white with black and tan markings.
