Scratching

by Dottie
(Ohio)

We just got a 9 month old cocker and had her groomed and she had no fleas but scratches constantly.

Any ideas?

If you're sure your puppy doesn't have fleas, she may have an allergy.

Allergies are difficult to treat as it takes a systematic approach to determining the reason for the allergy; you need to rule out one thing at a time.

For example, your puppy may be allergic or sensative to the shampoo you use to bath her. Make sure you use a specially formulated, mild, puppy shampoo (we use baby shampoo which suits our Cocker quite well).

Make sure you rinse all of the soap suds out of her coat as that can cause skin irritation. When you think she's fully rinsed, rince again just to be on the safe side.

Your puppy could be alergic to the type or brand of food you are feeding her. You may like to try her on a hypoallergenic dog food to see if this alleviates the problem.

Failing the above, your puppy may have an underlying illness which the vet should diagnose and recommend a suitable treatment.

If you don't get to the bottom of this problem, your dog could scratch herself so much that she causes damage to her skin and subsequent infection.

Hope she's ok soon!
