Red And Sore-Looking Gums
by Joyce

I have a dog who is 13 months old. Her teeth are as white as snow, but her gums are red and angry-looking. I think she might have Gingivitis.
She chews wood a lot and her breath is also very bad. She's eating well and is acting fairly normal.
Do you have any suggestions?
Reply From Pauline - WebownerLike humans, healthy gums are meant to be pink and red, inflammed gums, are a sign of bacterial infection or other peridontal problems. It sound as though she may have punctured her mouth or gums with a splinter and it has caused her gums to become infected – without seeing her, it’s really very difficult to comment.
If it is gingivitis, and it's not treated quickly, it can result in periodontitis which is where serious problems can develop, such as bone loss, and eventaully, tooth loss.
However, depending upon the stage the disease has reached, it may be reversable - the earlier it's treated, the better.
I’m afraid I’m not a vet and so cannot really advise you on your pet’s condition. I would recommend, however, that you get it checked out as it sounds as if there is something not quite right. Your vet will be able to offer correct diagnosis and advice.
Once you've visited the vet, why not let us know what he or she advises so that we can all learn from it?
