When it comes to choosing names for female dogs, you have lots of scope - although there's so many of them that the choice can sometimes be overwhelming!

So, where do you begin? Which criteria do you consider when looking for female dog names?

There aren't any strict rules to follow when choosing names for female dogs, but it's best if you try to match your puppy's new name to her breed and personality.

You don't need to name your puppy as soon as you get her, you can leave it a few days to allow you time to identify the characteristics of her personality.

Even better if you can visit the breeder regularly, prior to bringing home your puppy, you will have the opportunity to watch her personality develop.

Naming your dog after unusual characteristics or traits is fairly common. A puppy that is easily excitable may be called, for example, Trigger, Tizzy, or Fizz.

If you have a puppy that enjoys being stroked and patted (and who doesn't?) why not name her Cuddles?

Consider gentle sounding names for your girl puppy - names that sound feminine, like Whisper, Purdy, Rosebud, or Crystal.

Your puppy's coat colour and texture may be used as inspiration for choosing a suitable name, for example, if your puppy is a coffee colour, why not call her Chocolate, Cocoa, or Cappuccino?

Similarly, if her coat is soft in texture, Silky, Satin, or Cashmere, may suit.

You may also like to consider her size when naming your puppy; Tiny, Tinkerbell, or even Pudding if she's a little on the heavy side!

Alternatively, you may feel that she's too cool to have just any old name and prefer to choose from a selection of cool dog names.

When choosing names for female dogs, it's important to choose a name that not only suits your puppy, but, also one that suits the entire family - a name that they won't be embarrassed to use in public!

To help make it easier for you to choose your puppy's name, we've compiled a list of the best girl dog names here.

Why not put the kettle on, make yourself your favourite drink, and then take a leisurely browse through our selection of names for female dogs?

Happy hunting!
