My Puppy Won't Go Outside Alone - Why?

by Annie
(Scotland)

My cocker spaniel puppy is only 10 weeks old but will not stay in the garden alone or even go outside unless we are with her.

She will happily play outside if we are there.

Is this usual and how can we encourage her that the garden is not a bad place, even on her own?

My Puppy Won't Go Outside Alone!
by: Pauline (Site Owner)

We have been having a very cold spell recently, and, at first, I thought perhaps this could be the reason why your puppy doesn’t want to venture into the garden. However, as she seems happy to be outside when you’re with her, I don’t think the cold weather is the problem.

When puppies are very young, they tend not to venture too far away from their mother and siblings. As you are now her ‘mother’, she is applying this to you, and won’t want to stray far from you, let alone be out of your sight. I assure you, this is natural behaviour and is nothing to worry about.

When she gets a little older, and more confident, you will find that she will become more independent and will be happy to wander off on her own for a little while – enjoy it while you can!
