How much food should my 13 year-old cocker be eating a day?
Reply from Pauline (Webowner)All dogs are different and have varying nutritional needs depending upon their size, their age, as well as their lifestyles.
If your Cocker Spaniel is young and energetic, he will need much more food than, for example, an older dog. An older dog is less likely to be running around as much as a puppy or adolescent dog, which means he'll burn less calories.
Whether or not your Cocker Spaniel is neutered will also have an impact on how much he should eat. Neutered dogs need less calories otherwise they run the risk of becoming overweight.
The type of food your dog eats will also have an impact on how much he or she should eat.
In the first instance, I would recommend that you read the dog food manufacturers' labels (tinned or dry food) to give you a guide as to how much your dog should be eating and take it from there.
Weigh your dog to check that he's near enough to the correct weight for his age. If he's overweight follow the guidance in our article on
overweight dogs.
If he's just about the right weight, simply weigh him once a month to make sure it doesn't fluctuate. If he begins to lose weight, and isn't showing any signs of illness, increase his food a little.
If he begins to add weight, decrease it a little.
In addition to this advice, I recommend you check with your vet.
Good luck!
