Hello Jobi,

Puppy biting, at first, can sometimes appear quite cute, but it is something that should be addressed as quickly as possible and you are right to want to stop it.

I would recommend you try one or all of the following:

1. Buy a cheap nylon leash and coat it with bitter apple spray, oil of cloves, or a hot sauce. Your puppy will not like the taste and it may deter him from biting the leash.

2. Buy a leash which has a leather collar and a chain lead. Dogs and puppies tend not to like the feel of metal in their mouths. Please don't use a chain lead unless it has a leather collar attached as chain collars can be very dangerous (not to mention cruel) especially for young puppies.

3. When your dog bites his lead, it indicates that he is not in a calm state. When he bites the lead, stop all activity with your dog and put the lead out of sight.

Put him in a 'Sit' position and wait a couple of seconds before trying again. If you continue with this exercise (repeating as necessary) he will eventually get the message. You will need time and patience, and most important of all, stay calm.

Hope this helps.

Biting Lead
by: Sophie

We soaked our puppy's lead in a mixture of water and hot chilli powder. It didn't work immediately, but once the chilli kicked in, he didn't bite it any more - he emptied his water bowl though!
