Getting Rid Of Fleas
In Your Carpets

"Dog fleas and their eggs may reside in your carpets for many months which makes getting rid of them
a high priority!"

A flea infestation in your carpets is no joke and getting rid of fleas residing deep in the pile of your carpet is likely to be your first priority after de-lousing your dog.

Salt or Baking Powder

Salt or baking powder can be used as a natural flea removal to help get rid of fleas in your rugs and carpets.

These seem to work by dehydrating the flea eggs - killing them before they have a chance to develop.

You have two options:

  • Option 1 - You can place a small handful of salt on a saucer or tray and place it under the settee, under an armchair, or other furniture, but make sure it's inaccessible to small children.
  • Option 2 - You can sprinkle salt or baking powder (or both) onto your carpets and leave overnight before vaccuming clean. Vaccum once a day for three days to ensure all salt, baking powder and flea debris is removed from your carpets.

Water And Light

If you suspect there are fleas living in your carpets, you might like to try this.

At night, place a small bowl of soapy water in the middle of the room.

Float a tea light candle in the middle of the bowl. The fleas will be attracted by the light and will jump towards it - hopefully, they'll end up in the soapy water and drown.

If you don't feel comfortable using a naked flame, try leaving a small torch or night light propped up against the bowl.

Boric Acid

Boric acid, lightly sprinkled on carpets, left for 40 minutes and then vacuumed, will kill fleas and eggs nesting in the fibres of your carpet.

We mention this because other dog owners have used it and claim that it works; however, we don't recommend it, particularly where there are babies or young children. We feel it would be all too easy for children and/or pets to ingest it and become ill - better safe than sorry!

We've given you a couple of ideas for removing a flea infestation from carpets and rugs.

If you have any ideas of your own for getting rid of fleas in the house, why not share them with us and our visitors - we'd love to hear from you!
