There Are Many Types of Pet Beds...From Designer Dog Beds To The Humble Dog Blanket

Dog Beds - What Choice Do I Have And What Should I Consider Before Buying?"

Dog beds are available in many different sizes, types, and a variety of interesting shapes and materials.

You'll find blankets, rugs, mats, cushions or pillows, and snugglers - all of which make wonderful beds for our dogs, depending on their needs.

  • Dog blankets come in many sizes, according to the size of dog, and are usually very soft and comfortable.

They can be used to line a bed or a simple box to make your dog more comfortable.

  • Dog rugs are simply rugs - a thin floor covering, but slightly thicker and coarser than a blanket.
  • Dog mats are thicker still and are usually padded with a firm foam slab. They may be supplied with a removable, washable, fabric cover or they may have a plastic cover that can be simply wiped clean with a damp cloth.
  • Snugglers are 'nest' beds that have raised sides around three-quarters of the bed, with a lower section at the front to allow the dog to step in and out of his bed easily.
  • Dog pillows are simply large, soft, cushions.

  • Dog beds are padded with a variety of different fillings - plastic chips, polyfill, cedar chips, wool, polyester and other synthetic fibres - just make sure the bed you choose, and its filling, are fire retardent.

Cedar chips are said to repel fleas but may not be as comfortable as other available fillings and will also need to be refreshed from time to time.

A rigid plastic bed, with raised edges and a removeable cushion, will ensure your dog is kept warm and cosy - protected against draughts and the wet. Plastic beds are less likely to be affected by mildew or mould.

If you really want to pamper your pooch, there are many stylish (in who's eyes?) designer dog beds available; faux leopard skin, zebra striped, Cinderella carriage shaped, pink and fluffy with ribbons, etc - you can even buy dog furniture!

Yes, you can even buy your pet a specially designed dog chair or dog sofa and although these may be rather more expensive than normal dog beds; there are lots of pampered pooches out there with their own 'doggie sofas'!

Choosing a bed for your dog has never been easier - learn how to choose the perfect bed for your Cocker Spaniel!

Where's The Best Place For My Dog's Bed?

The best place to site your Cocker's bed is in a quiet corner where he can still see what's going on, but away from heavy family traffic areas such as entrance halls, walkways,
    or doorways.

Avoid placing your Cocker's bed by radiators or heaters, otherwise he may become too hot and uncomfortable.

Our Cocker Spaniel, Max, had a habit of jumping up onto the sofa when we weren't around. We don't allow him on the furniture (mostly) so we weren't happy with this behaviour.

We tried moving his bed into the lounge, next to the sofa. It took a little training and persistence from us but he's now less interested in climbing onto the furniture, preferring his own bed instead.

Some dogs simply don't like to lie on the floor; they find it very unyielding and uncomfortable. His own bed will provide a warm, comfortable barrier between your dog and a chilly floor.

The dog beds we've discussed above are mostly indoor dog beds and wouldn't necessarily be suitable for permanent outdoor use.

If you'd also like an outdoor bed for your Cocker Spaniel, our articles on Dog Kennels and Dog Houses may help you find just what you're looking for.

With the vast array of beds available to choose from, it's easy get carried away and choose a bed simply on impulse - find out how to choose the right dog bed for your pet.

    Dog Blankets

A couple of dog blankets will help to keep your Cocker Spaniel warm and cosy and, once his scent has permeated his blanket, it will become a source of comfort to him.
