Collars and Leads

by Ali
(England)

HI, we are about to get our first cocker spaniel (and first dog for all of us). I am confused as to what sort of collar or lead to get the puppy, any advice please?

A new puppy - how exciting!

There's so much to learn when you're bringing home a new puppy!

I would recommend a soft nylon puppy collar for your cocker's first collar. It needs to be light enough for him not to feel too uncomfortable, but strong enough to contain him.

For his lead, I would recommend a similar, matching, nylon lead.

Don't buy one of those choke collars or choke leads as they can do your puppy some serious damage. Puppy necks are very delicate so you'll need to be very gentle when teaching him to walk on the lead - please don't jerk the lead too sharply.

When your cocker is older and better trained, you might like to consider a different type of collar and lead as there are many different types, materials, colours and patterns, on the market - the only firm recommendation I would give is not to use a choke chain.

In the meanwhile, enjoy your puppy!

Collars and Leads

Hi Ali, I'd recommend you go straight to a collar and lead. If trained well, your puppy won't need a harness.

Thank you for your reply, would you use a harness with a puppy or just go straight to the lead and collar?
