Baby Ben

My 4 year old cocker spaniel has been having some sort of seizures. He begins salivating then his hind legs give out then the front will follow.

His whole body shakes and it takes 5 - 10 minutes for him to recover. Blood work did not show any problems. The doctor has suggested we travel 150 miles to have his heart checked.

It sounds like epileptic attacks, but then again I am not a professional but a very concerned mother. Can you please help me.

Reply from Pauline (Web Owner)

I'm so very sorry to hear that Baby Ben is having problems - it sounds like he (and you) are having a really bad time.

I am not a vet, nor do I have any medical training - I am simply someone with a passion for cocker spaniels, writing a website that can offer helpful information to other cocker spaniel owners.

My personal advice to you would be to speak to your vet again and let him know just how concerned and worried you are about Ben.

Before you speak to him, think very carefully about Ben's symptoms and write them down. For example - When did they begin? How many times has it happened? How long does it last? How did his eyes look, hard and staring, or soft, frightened? Was he sick? Did he have a loose bowel movement? Was he panting? Was he whimpering? What was he doing at the time? Was he drooling? Could he have ingested something poisonous?

Your observations and the answers to these questions may help your vet to pinpoint the problem.

If your vet has examined Ben and taken blood tests, which aren't highlighting any problems, that must be at least a small degree of comfort to you. If your vet has told you that Ben may be suffering from seizures, ask him what would be the outcome if that were the problem. I believe seizures can be managed by medication.

Ask your vet outright what he thinks it could be and ask him as many questions that you can. You could always 'Google it' to learn more later.

If it were me, I would travel the 150 miles to have Ben's heart checked and take it from there.

I will add your question to my Cocker Spaniel Questions & Answers page in the hope that someone may be able to offer you some advice or words of comfort.

In the meanwhile, please stay in touch and let know of any progress.

Sorry to read about Ben's problem - I can't help but I really hope he gets well soon.

I'd really like to see a photo of him - I looked in the YOUR PHOTOS! section but couldn't find one.
