Are Cocker Spaniels Good with Children?

My family and I are looking for a dog. Are Cocker Spaniels good with children?

Reply from Pauline (Web Owner)

Most dogs are good with children if the dogs are well-trained and the children understand and follow certain ground rules.

Whilst cocker spaniels can be sensitive and sometimes feel 'overpowered' by children, in the main, I feel cockers make great family dogs.

I recommend you read this article which explains how the dog should be trained and what ground-rules you may want to set for your children. The article is called, Do Cocker Spaniels Make Good Family Dogs?

Cockers Are Great With Children!

Cockers are rated as one of the most child friendly dogs you can own. I have 2 cocker spaniels and 3 horrible children lol!

I rear for my dogs not the kids !!!

Cockers and Children

I have a six year old male cocker spaniel. He has been well-socialzed but since a very young pup, he has growled at children and distinguished a child from a short adult at a block or two away.

Once he is familiar with them, he is fine. I'll never understand how he knows a young person from an adult.

Has NEVER been abused, teased or mistreated.

Good With Children
by: Anonymous

Most cocker spaniels are great with children. We've had several cockers as our kids were growing up, without any problems - although we did set a few ground rules for our children.

They were not allowed to go into the dog's bed or crate - that was for our dogs only - it was their space.

Nor were the children allowed near the dogs when they were being fed and although my dogs have never had food aggression issues, I didn't want to take the risk.

We also kept playtime at a very gentle pace unless they were outside throwing a ball or frisbee.

I'd thoroughly recommend cocker spaniels as family dogs - they're great!
